Returnees and Global Returnees
tReturnees are people who grew up in Vermont, moved away for a list a year (apart from schooling or military service), and moved back to Vermont. They, like Vermont stayers, tend to value living near family, appreciate Vermont's landscape, and like Vermont's community/culture. They tend not to return to Vermont for a specific job or employment.
Of the returnees who responded to the 2014 Vermont Roots Migration Survey, nearly 20% had lived abroad. In fact, returnees were more likely to have lived abroad than in many regions of the United States. In order to better understand the experiences of these global returnees to Vermont, and the connections they maintain to international locations, we conducted a separate research project in 2016. The resulting report is titled "Vermont Returnees and Their Global Connections."
The table below shows reasons for returning to Vermont for people who have lived abroad (global returnees) and those who have not (non-global returnees). Statistical differences between groups are noted.
